What Oil Weight Is Right for My Car?

Your owner's manual lists a recommended weight of oil to use in your car. But what does oil weight mean? Cars operate at a wide range of temperatures, from when they've been sitting all night to when you're driving on the highway, from when you're coasting downhill to when you're passing on the uphill, and from summer to winter.

Motor oil has a high viscosity when it's cold and a lower viscosity at the engine's normal operating temperature so that it's always the right thickness to lubricate your engine properly. Multi-grade oils have two viscosity grades (such as 10W-30, a common multi-grade oil). The first number '10W' is the viscosity of the oil at cold temperatures and the second number is the viscosity at 212 degrees.

But not all cars use 10w-30 oil because all cars are different. Your owner's manual will tell you which grade of oil to use. If you are unsure of which motor oil is best for your car or SUV, check with your certified Cadillac technician.
